Louis takes Pommel Gold!
Huntingdon Gymnast, Louis Smith, had a golden weekend at a Gymnastics World Cup event held in Osijek, Croatia over the weekend. The triple Olympic medallist and reigning european champion on pommel horse was in fine form, qualifying for the final in 1st place and then taking gold with an impressive score of 15.55. Croatia's Robert Seligman came second with 14.85, and Andrei Sienichkin took bronze with 14.7.
The prestigious event which featured over 200 of the worlds best gymnasts, serves as a warm up for the World Championships, to be held in Glasgow next month. Smith's result will bode well in his campaign to gain selection for the 6 man GB squad that will fight for Olympic qualification in one month's time.
'I felt well prepared for this event and have more in the tank to be able to improve my score still further' commented Smith.
Huntingdon Head Coach, Paul Hall, was pleased with the result:
'Louis has shown great consistency on pommel horse and this result proves that he is still a medal contender at World and Olympic level.
Clubmate Daniel Keatings also competed at the event but failed to qualify for finals. Both gymnasts now prepare for the London Open next weekend and then have two more international matches before the World Championship Team is selected. Great Britain has a target to finish in the Top 8 Teams in Glasgow next month in order to qualify a full team for the Rio Olympics in less than a years time.
